The Design Process

Outlined below is a general process recommended by us, to get the most from your final design. However, every situation is different so the process will be tailored to suit your needs.

  • The process starts with a consultation. You meet Luke in person, on site, where you will get to know each other. It’s important if you are a couple, that both of you attend the consultation. That way, everyone is on the same page. If you have some ideas about what you would like to achieve with the space, this will be the time to talk about them. If you have some pictures you are taking inspiration from, make sure you have them handy.

  • If you have a new build with suitable plans of your property, its likely that you won’t need a site survey. The same goes for an old house looking to completely re start you garden, however in most cases the site survey is necessary to make sure any existing trees, buildings or hardscapes you wish to keep, appear accurately on your final design/base plan.

  • After the initial consultation, it’s important to make sure all ideas have been communicated, and understood properly. Luke will write up a brief that highlights all the details from your meeting, and send it to your for review. If there is something missing or something that you think has been misunderstood, now would be a great time to bring it up. This brief will be used, moving forward, as a reference point for the design. Now, this doesn’t mean there can’t be a free flow of ideas, and changes after the brief , it just keeps those ideas focused and accurate.

The start of a mood board will also be created. This is the place where you and Luke can communicate with images around textures, colours, and design ideas.

  • Once the brief is settled, Luke will draw up a concept plan. This will be quite a rough design with minimal colour and plant annotations. The idea of the concept plan is to get an idea for how the space or spaces feel and react with each other. Once presented with the plan, it’s now your opportunity to give feedback and make changes where you see fit.

  • The master plan is a birds eye view of your property. it will be presented to you in mono and colour, both digitally and as a hard copy. These plans will be annotated and to scale so they may be used in the build process.

  • If you would like some 3D visuals, its best to bring this up in the initial consultation. The visuals are produced alongside both the concept and master plans so that any changes get made in both 2D and 3D. The 3D visuals aren’t generally used in the build process, however they do offer excellent insight into how your garden will look and feel. If you have trouble to visualise from a plan, or just want to make sure everything is just how you want it, we Highly recommend getting some 3D images and walkthroughs.

  • Planting plans aren’t always necessary, especially if you are green fingered and have a good idea of what you would like to grow and where. If, however, you need some help with plants, a planting plan is for you. Not only will it have a list and location of all the plants in your garden, but it also has a handy guide on how to look after them as well.

  • To finish off, you will have a final meeting with luke. You will be presented with your master plans and go through your 3D images and walkthroughs if you have them. Now the design process is over! However, we still need to build your garden. Luke can take care of that process as well. Happy Landscapes can be the main landscape construction company, and anything out of their scope will be contracted out. Luke can sort all of this out for you, making sure we stay within your budget.
